“It is also an immediate result and a positive reflection of the tough decisions that have been made. “MGM is ‘doubling down’ on the Borgata as the city’s largest casino in its gaming industry, showing that the opportunity for a revitalized economy is alive and active,” he said in a statement. Senate President Stephen Sweeney said news of the sale should be viewed as a “strong sign of the city’s potential.” The city was just a week or two from shutting down services. Chris Christie signed the Atlantic City rescue package into law, following months of political turmoil and uncertainty about the municipality’s future. “While we are pleased with the performance of this property, this transaction is an attractive opportunity to immediately unlock significant value for our shareholders.”

“Under our leadership, Borgata firmly established itself as the East Coast’s most popular and successful entertainment resort throughout the last 13 years,” Keith Smith, the chief executive of Boyd Gaming, said in a statement. But the city’s remaining casinos have showed signs that they are stabilizing - even growing. The gaming industry in Atlantic City has lost billions of dollars in annual revenue as betting parlors opened up and down the east coast, prompting once-regular customers to try their luck closer to home. Borgata is the New Jersey’s most successful casino and has managed to flourish even as four of the state’s dozen casinos closed.
